Chicago teachers Tuesday night suspended their strike, clearing the way for students to funnel back into their classrooms.
A meeting of some 800 delegates of the Chicago teachers union concluded with the suspension of the seven-day strike.
The end of the strike does not mean that teachers have agreed to the proposed settlement presented over the weekend. Points of contention still exist relating to teacher evaluations and job security.
The union has delayed its vote on the proposal, offering teachers a chance to evaluate the contract before a vote is takes place in the coming weeks.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had hoped for a quick resolution to the strike, but when that did not happen he turned to the courts to force teachers back into the district's classrooms. A hearing before a Cook County Judge was expected as early as tomorrow, and now appears unnecessary.
Chicago is home to the 3rd largest school district in the country, educating some 350,000 students. With an average salary of $76,000, Chicago teachers are among the highest-paid in the country. But some teachers are upset it did not restore a 4 percent raise Emanuel rescinded last year. |
