The chairman of the congressional committee today is holding the first hearing on the General Services Administrations lavish Las Vegas spending spree on a regional conference for some 300 staffers.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, noted that Jeffrey Neely, the western regional commissioner who organized the conference in 2010.
Aside from the contempt of the ridiculous amount of money spent on the conference Issa noted that Neely and four staffers are on administrative leave and are still receiving a government paycheck.
Appearing before the Issa's congressional hearing on Monday, Neely invoked the Fifth Amendment.
"Mr, Chairman, on the advice of my counsel I respectfully decline to answer based upon my Fifth Amendment constitutionally privilege," Neely said repeatedly in response to a string of questions from Rep. Issa.
The top Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., on the House oversight committee also ripped into the organizer of the lavish Las Vegas conference.
Cummings, referring to internal documents, accused Neely and his wife of blowing through federal tax-dollars, as if they believed they were "some kind of agency royalty who used taxpayer funds to bankroll their lavish lifestyle."
