Appearing in front of a crowd in his home state of Michigan, Republican presidential candidate made a comment viewed by some as a swipe at President Obama.
Noting that he and his wife, Ann, were born in Michigan hospitals, Romney said: "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised."
The crowd of roughly 1,000 responded knowingly with loud cheers, and several supporters said in interviews following the rally that they interpreted Romney's comment as a dig at Obama.
"The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States," Romney adviser Kevin Madden said. "He was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised."
The day's political news also centered around a press conference held by Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) who is still defying party big wigs who want him to bow out of the race against Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.
"We're going to be here through the November election and we're going to be here to win," he said.
"There's some people having trouble understanding our message," a defiant Akin said before declaring his intention to stay in the race.
That news coming a day after a new poll shows Mr. Romney is leading the president among likely voters. According to a Fox News poll of likely voters, the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket receives the backing of 45 percent, while the Barack Obama-Joe Biden ticket garners 44 percent. |
