Al Armendariz, now an infamous face associated with the 'cruxifiction' of fossil fuel energy companies, resigned over the weekend.
Armendariz, a top environmental official in the South and Southwest region, resigned over the weekend, saying he did not want to be a distraction for the agency.
In his resignation letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Armendariz wrote, "As I have expressed publicly, and to you directly, I regret comments I made several years ago that do not in any way reflect my work as regional administrator. As importantly, they do not represent the work you have overseen as EPA administrator."
His resignation effective Monday comes after scrutiny of his comments back in 2010, when he described EPA enforcement tactics as Roman-like, "They'd go in to a little Turkish town somewhere, they'd find the first five guys they saw, and they'd crucify them."
Congressional Republicans have been calling for Armendariz' firing since the video taped remarks went public last week. In particular, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe highlighted the May 2010 speech as proof of what he refers to as EPA's assault on energy, particularly the technique of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
