When the President last year spoke with great passion and accomplishment about the "Arab Spring" he probably didn't expect that he would get challenged by factions within our once close ally Egypt.
However that's exactly what has happened as the Muslim Brotherhood has gained standing in Cairo.
Egyptian judges have referred 16 Americans and 27 others linked to NGOs for trial, accusing them of using foreign funds to encourage disruptive protests.
That has sparked outrage in Washington DC where a chorus of senior lawmakers are calling for aid to Egypt to be suspended over the affair, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned that the funds could be in jeopardy.
But now the Obama administration is engaged in a high-stakes poker match, with the Muslim Brotherhood warning that any cuts in aid to Egypt would violate the U.S.-brokered 1979 peace agreement with Israel.
Saber rattling or not, the Obama administration is now, perhaps for the first time, carefully calculate a diplomatic response that protects the lives of 16 Americans and doesn't destabilize the Middle East.
