The White House is pulling its offer of food aid for North Korea after the nation's unsuccessful attempt to launch a long-range missile rocket.
In reaction to the failed launch, the White House in a statement said, "Despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, North Korea's provocative action threatens regional security, violates international law and contravenes its own recent commitments."
North Korea's much-anticipated rocket launch at 6:39 pm (ET) on Thursday ended in failure, splintering into pieces over the Yellow Sea about 90-seconds after takeoff.
The launch is also a setback for the government of new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The rocket launch intended to be a show of strength.
The foreign ministers of the G8 nations meeting in Washington, condemned the launch. The U.N. Security Council, meanwhile, scheduled an emergency meeting for later this afternoon.
