President Obama and his administration are facing criticism from top lawmakers over their inability to speak honestly about the terror attack in Benghazi that claimed the life of Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Since last week's terror attack in Benghazi, the Obama administration has failed to speak honestly and directly about the events. First, Obama claimed the attack was the result of spontaneous protests that sprang up as a result of a video considered offensive to Muslims for its depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.
Later reports from Libyan officials and intelligence sources pointed to the fact that the attack was actually a planned act of terrorism. However, the administration waited until Thursday to finally describe the attack as terrorism. Obama continues to cite the video as important in the attacks, as well as anti-American protests taking place across the Muslim world, from Egypt to Indonesia. Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has also described the attack in Benghazi as "spontaneous."
Following a Thursday night briefing with officials from the Obama administration, which included Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, lawmakers are complaining that they still don't have all the facts. Questions remain to be answered about Al Qaeda's role in the attack, as well as the reported involvement of a former Guantanamo Bay detainee.
"You hate to think that the president would purposely mislead the American people, but it sure looks like it to me," House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon(R-CA) said.
More than a week has passed since four Americans lost their lives in a terrorist attack, and the public deserves the truth from President Obama and his administration. |
