By announcing today that he's asking Congress for authority to streamline agencies within the executive branch of government, the President is attempting to alter his image as a big government guy to that of someone looking to downsize government.
Only problem is that the consolidation proposed today will only reduce the federal workforce by 1,000 to 2,000, barely putting a dent in the size of government that's increase by 25,000 since he took office nearly 3-years ago.
The proposed consolidation would affect the Commerce Department as well as five smaller agencies. The president, who can't make the change on his own, will ask Congress for fast-track authority to undertake the reorganization. Under the plan, Mr. Obama could propose mergers that would be guaranteed an up-or-down vote from Congress within 90 days.
By simultaneously seeking to promote the stature of the head of the Small Business Administration to cabinet-level status, the president appears to be seeking to show that he is looking out for a part of the business sector that Republicans say is the main engine of job growth, and one that other Obama policies have hurt.
