Pelosi Downplays Significance of Romney Tax Returns
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pulled a bit of an about-face this week on the issue of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's tax returns.
Pelosi along with countless Democrats were critical of Mitt Romney not releasing more than two years worth of his returns.
On Thursday the California Democrat said the issue will be resolved between Republicans and American voters.
"The American people are the judges of that," she said. "The longer he takes to release them doesn't make me sad."
However, reporters began to pepper her with questions about her own tax returns.
"When I run for president of the United States, you can hold me to that standard," she said in response.
But after further pressing, while maintaining that Romney should release more information as is "custom" and "tradition," Pelosi admitted the issue is inconsequential compared to the economic issues facing our country.
"We spent too much time on that. We should be talking about middle-income tax cuts," Pelosi said after answering two questions about the issue. |
