Mitt Romney's success in business is giving him a leg up over President Obama according to a new poll of registered voters.
The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows registered voters favor Mitt Romney over the president, when it comes to the economy, by a comfortable margin, 43% to 36%. However the president's would-be Republican challenger is still trailing Obama in virtually every other metric measured by the poll.
Poll results on issues other than economy:
-Looking out for the middle class? Mr. Obama (49% to 33%) -Being knowledgeable and experienced enough to handle the presidency? Mr. Obama (48% to 32%) -Being a good commander in chief? Mr. Obama leads by 10 points. Mr. Romney is looking to address that last number with an international trip that will take him to England, Poland and Israel. "Foreign policy, which is never a Democratic strength, is very much an Obama strength and a strength against Romney," said Peter Hart, the Democratic pollster who conducts the Journal survey along with Republican Bill McInturff. "Romney has that challenge of passing that commander in chief threshold that all challengers face.... Obama's position is the strongest that I can remember in my lifetime."
Despite Mr. Romney's advantage on economic issues, he appears to have done little to convince voters that he would change "business as usual in Washington," the poll found. He remains statistically tied in that category with Mr. Obama among independents and the broader survey, despite being the challenger.
And Mr. Obama has yet to make much progress with working-class whites, despite focusing his campaign on bringing fairness to the economy and attacking Mr. Romney as an out-of-touch corporate raider.
While independents and every income bracket think the current president would be a better watchman for the middle class, white working-class voters still gave a narrow edge in that category to Mr. Romney. |
