Speaking from a school in the swing state of Virginia, the president today shrugged off news the economy grew a meager 115,000 jobs in April. Instead choosing to highlight a falling unemployment rate and job creation over the past two-years.
"After the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, our businesses have now created more than 4.2 million jobs over the last 26 months (and) more than one million jobs in the last six months alone," Obama said, omitting the fact that some 342,000 Americans dropped out to the labor force in April.
Ever the campaigner-in-chief, the president pointed to Congress as a point of relief for stagnating job growth. "Next week, I am going to urge Congress... to take some actions on common sense ideas right now that can accelerate even more jobs growth."
What those 'common sense ideas' are is still a mystery. Perhaps a bigger mystery; if the ideas are truly common sense, why haven't they been proposed or enacted by either the president or Congress before now?
These events unfolding on the same day that TransCanada Corp. says it reapplied for a U.S. permit for the hotly contested northern section of the Keystone Pipeline.
A project that depending on who you're speaking with would add 6,500 to 50,000 jobs to the economy and go along way in reducing our dependency on Middle East oil.
The Obama State Department, acknowledged that it had received TransCanada's revised application and route, saying it was "committed to conducting a rigorous, transparent and thorough review." The department also said in a statement that it would not be able to complete its review before early 2013, well after the Presidential elections will be decided. |
