Speaking from Afghanistan last night, President Obama attempted to explain to the American people his grand path going forward in the Taliban riddled nation struggling to find its way.
What started out as a recognition of the sacrifices of our brave soldiers defending the American lives and ideals turned into a political speech.
To think that our President flew 14,000 miles round-trip to tell the American people what we already knew shows how out of touch he is with his constituents. Yes, it was the 1-year Anniversary of the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, an occasion nearly every American treasures. But would his speech have had greater weight had it been delivered let's say at Ground Zero? Perhaps then he could have framed his speech around the resilience of the American spirit as new structures arise from the ashes of the World Trade Center.
But no, he needed a back drop of military vehicles in a hostile country to show the American television audience that he is the commander in chief. A commander who in a 1,556 word speech let the American people know the Taliban has expressed interest in a negotiated peace, that our troops will still have much to sacrifice in the years to come, but not once uttered the word victory! |
