Mitt Romney remains on the offensive, today accusing the Obama administration of leaking sensitive security information for political advantage.
"This conduct is contemptible. It betrays our national interest. It compromises our men and women in the field. And it demands a full and prompt investigation, with explanation and consequence," Romney said. "Whoever provided classified information to the media, seeking political advantage for the administration, must be exposed, dismissed and punished. The time for stonewalling is over."
Romney's comments come on the heels of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's, D-Calif. comments on Monday when she said, "I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from its ranks. I don't know specifically where, but they have to understand that and do something about it."
The Democratic leader of the Senate Intelligence Committee added, "To know what the president actually knows about this is difficult, because with respect to intelligence he is in a bubble. He has his [president's daily brief] early every morning. And so he gets a briefing of intelligence. I don't believe for a moment he goes out and talks about it. I don't believe the briefers go out and talk about it. But who knows who else?"
Romney, in remarks to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said whoever is responsible needs to be "exposed, dismissed, and punished."
The Republican presidential candidate is drawing new attention to the leak controversy ahead of an overseas trip to Britain, Israel and Poland. His speech to the VFW comes one day after Obama addressed the same group.
Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed two attorneys to lead the investigation into who leaked information about U.S. involvement in cyber-attacks on Iran and about an Al Qaeda plot to place an explosive device aboard a U.S.-bound airliner.
Romney as well as Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill have complained that the DOJ appointed investigators don't have the power or autonomy to conduct a thorough investigation before the November elections. |
