Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he's not paying much attention to a Newsweek cover story titled, Romney: The Wimp Factor, Is He Just Too Insecure To Be President?
In the Newsweek article that hit stands this week, writer Michael Tomasky writes: "He's kind of lame, and he's really ... annoying. He keeps saying these ... things, these incredibly off-key things. Then he apologizes immediately-with all the sincerity of a hostage. Or maybe he doesn't: sometimes he whines about the subsequent attacks on him. But the one thing he never does? Man up, double down, take his lumps."
But the Republican isn't paying much attention to the article or the question. In fact Romney brushed off Tomasky's assertion noting that Newsweek ran a similar story on George H.W. Bush back in 1987 before he won the 1988 presidential election.
"They tried that on George Herbert Walker Bush. He was a pretty great president," Romney told Jan Crawford of CBS on Sunday.
Romney's right not to worry - yet. In an election about the economy, the most important thing for the GOP nominee is to appear to be a credible alternative to the incumbent on that front.
And on the economy, the former Massachusetts Governor is ahead of the president when it comes to the economy and jobs. The USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found that more than 6-out-of-10 preferred Mr. Romney over President Obama.
Romney's campaign is launching dozens of events this week seeking to play up Obama's "You didn't build that" and "It worked" comments by featuring small business owners, a group that GALLUP found overwhelmingly disapproved of the president's policies. |
