Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is defending his remarks regarding the likelihood that "no matter what", 47% of the nation with vote for President Obama.
In an interview with Fox News, Romney defended his assertions, claiming that those who aren't paying any federal income taxes would actually like to be a part of the taxpaying community.
"I do believe that we should have enough jobs and enough take-home pay such that people have the privilege of higher incomes that allow them to be paying taxes," Romney said Tuesday. "I think people would like to be paying taxes."
Romney is finding himself on the defensive after his comments to a group of supporters were secretly recorded, and leaked to media outlets.
The Republican presidential nominee explained on Fox News that he was trying to outline a key difference between his view of government versus that of President Obama.
"Frankly, we have two very different views about America," Romney said. "The president's view is one of a larger government."
Romney during the interview highlighted a web video showing Obama in 1998 supporting the concept of "redistribution."
"I disagree," Romney said. "I think a society based upon a government-centered nation where government plays a larger and larger role, redistributes money, that's the wrong course for America. ... The right course for America is to create growth, create wealth." Romney is taking some heat from the left which claims his remarks about the 47% not voting for him is a sign Mr. Romney is writing off nearly half of all voters.
To that Romney said his campaign is looking for votes anywhere they can get them, but admitted those not currently paying federal income taxes will likely not be attracted to his message of smaller, less intrusive government.
"And those that are dependent upon government and those that think government's job is to redistribute, I'm not going to get them," he said.
Romney, while saying his phrasing was not ideal, stood by the premise of his remarks, which were reportedly taped by a grandchild of former President Jimmy Carter. |
