The Romney camp today coming out swinging at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., today re-iterated allegations that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is a tax cheat.
In a speech on the Senate floor, Reid, called on Romney to release more tax returns.
"Let him prove that he has paid taxes, because he hasn't," Reid said.
"Mitt Romney makes more money in a single day than the average middle-class family makes in two years or more," he added.
Reid has made the accusation over a period of days. He told reporters yesterday that the burden is on Romney to prove that he is innocent, not on himself to prove that his accusation is true. A strange interpretation of the philosophy that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
Romney top aide Eric Fehrnstrom today responded to the senator's allegations. "I'm telling you -- authoritatively, speaking on behalf of the governor -- that those charges are untrue; they're baseless, and there is nothing to back them up," Fehrnstrom told Fox News' Bill Hemmer.
Making a reference to Sen. Joe McCarthy's infamous witch-hunt, Fehrnstrom asked of Reid, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? Is there nothing that you won't do to debase yourself and your office in the name of dirty politics?" |
