Note to the Obama administration; Intelligence leaks will cost American lives. That was the message from Admiral William McRaven, head of the Special Operations Command.
Speaking at Aspen Institute Security Conference Wednesday night, Admiral McRaven had general praise for the president.
"I very much enjoyed working for President Bush, and I very much enjoy working for President Obama," he said.
But when it comes to the security of the men and women who serve under him, security leaks are something that cannot be tolerated.
"We are never happy when leaks occur and we go to very great lengths to protect our sources and methods," he said. "Sooner or later it is going to cost people their lives, or its going to cost us our national security."
Admiral McRaven's comments come just days after similar concerns were brought up by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who put at least part of the blame at the feet of the Obama administration.
"I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from its ranks," Feinstein told her audience at the World Affairs Council. "I don't know specifically where, but they have to understand that and do something about it."
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also seized on Feinstein's comments as an open door to criticize the administration for being in denial.
"This isn't a partisan issue; it's a national security crisis," Romney said. He later added: "Whoever provided classified information to the media, seeking political advantage for the administration, must be exposed, dismissed and punished. The time for stonewalling is over."
Obama and the administration have strongly rejected the leak accusations. Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed two attorneys to lead the investigation into who leaked information about U.S. involvement in cyber attacks on Iran and about an al-Qaida plot to place an explosive device aboard a U.S.-bound airliner. |
