Listening to comments at the the Supreme Court hearing on Arizona's immigration law SB 1070, it seems like the court may uphold a key element of Arizona's immigration law, as justices across the board suggested the state has a serious problem on its hands and should have some latitude as to how it deals with illegal immigration.
The justices appeared ready to allow an element of the law allowing police officers to check the immigration status of people they think are in the U.S. illegally.
Questions and comments from the justices suggest they are not buying into the Obama administration's argument that the state exceeded its authority. Chief Justice John Roberts during the hearing actually questioned the whether or not the administration wants to know how many illegal immigrants are in the country.
The obstacles facing the Obama administration however were not just from the justices with a conservative leaning. "You can see it's not selling very well," Justice Sonia Sotomayor told Obama administration Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.
Similar to the hearings on ObamaCare a month ago, there were plenty of comments made by observers outside the confines of the court walls.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer was loudly booed by the law's opponents. She said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that "I am filled with optimism -- the kind that comes with knowing that Arizona's cause is just and its course is true."
While the justices addressed the traffic stop provision today, it was unclear how they will address or perceive other aspects of the law that have been put on hold by lower federal courts.
