Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney bests the president in July fundraising, raking in over $100 million for second straight month.
Romney's camp on Monday confirming that it collected $101.3 million in July. The president's team raised just $75 million.
The money raised through donations will be split between the Romney campaign Romney Victor and the Republican National Committee.
The Obama campaign, glossing over the fact that it's been out-performed now for three straight months, tried to highlight the diversity of its donors, some who a new supporters of team Obama.
The campaign pointed out that 26% of its more than 760,000 July donors hadn't contributed to the president's campaign in 2008.
Both campaigns reported that the vast majority of their donations were of sums equal to less than $250, 98%-Obama - 94%-Romney.
Overall, Obama and the Democrats are still ahead in the race for cash, having raised about $627 million compared with some $495 million raised by Romney and the Republicans.
But that advantage, typically enjoyed by a sitting president running for re-election, is quickly fading away.
Relying largely on big donors, the Romney campaign, the RNC and state Republican parties involved in the joint fundraising effort had $185.9 million left in cash on hand at the end of July. Obama's campaign has not disclosed its cash on hand at the end of the month. |
