The presidential campaigns declared a cease fire as Americans woke to news of the shooting rampage in Aurora, Colorado that so far claimed the lives of 12, injuring dozens.
From Fort Myers, Florida, President Obama spoke briefly, keeping his comments focused on the tragedy.
"If there is any takeaway from this, it's that life is fragile," Obama said. "Our time here is limited, and it's precious."
Signaling a temporary cease fire during what was a campaign stop Obama said "There are going to be other days for politics."
Both the Vice President and First Lady Michelle Obama also cancelled planned events.
VP Biden who lost his first wife and daughter wrote, "The reason this is so deeply felt by all Americans is that, but for the grace of God, the victims could have been any one of our children, in any one of our towns.... It is every parent's worst nightmare to receive 'that phone call' and to sit by their child's bedside, praying."
Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney also scratched all campaign events for the day.
"I stand before you today not as a man running for office but as a father and grandfather, a husband, an American. This is a time for each of us to look into our hearts and remember how much we love one another and how much we love and how much we care for our great country. There's so much love and goodness in the heart of America."
Both the Obama and Romney campaigns suspended their ad campaigns in Colorado for the time being. |
